At Victoria College, cultural diversity is not simply acknowledged - it is celebrated, nurtured, and woven into the fabric of school life. Our commitment to wellbeing and inclusivity sits at the heart of our strategic plan, shaping a broader culture of kindness that ensures every student feels valued, supported, and seen.
Wellbeing and Inclusivity at the Core
The wellbeing of students is our highest priority. We recognise that learning can only flourish when young people feel emotionally safe and supported, which is why mental health awareness and support is central to our approach. Students have access to counselling and pastoral support whenever needed, ensuring they never face challenges alone.
Over the years, Victoria College has grown into an increasingly inclusive community. Today, more than 100 multilingual students enrich our school with their languages, traditions, and perspectives with over 40 languages spoken in addition to English. This diversity is embraced and celebrated through assemblies, speeches, and dedicated initiatives that encourage students to share their cultural backgrounds with pride.
To further strengthen this commitment, the College hosts two student led clubs focused on promoting inclusion and diversity – Culture Club and Diversity and Inclusion Club. These groups provide platforms for students to express themselves, learn from one another, and build a school environment where everyone feels they belong. Our Multilingual Lead also works closely with the Jersey Youth Project to connect students with events, courses, and opportunities designed specifically for multilingual young people.
Supporting Students During Ramadan
Our dedication to inclusivity extends to meaningful, practical support for students observing religious or cultural practices. During Ramadan, the College has taken thoughtful steps to ensure Muslim students feel respected and supported throughout the month.
Five of our Muslim students volunteered to share their experiences of Ramadan, helping the school better understand their needs. A temporary prayer area has been set up on site, and time will be made available for Eid prayer where required.
Staff were briefed on the start of Ramadan and made aware of students who are fasting. They have been encouraged to avoid placing students under unnecessary physical strain during lessons or activities. Our Multilingual Lead, who is also observing Ramadan, remains in close contact with fasting students to listen to their suggestions, concerns, or needs. Parents are warmly encouraged to reach out if they have any questions or require additional support.
The Culture Club: A Hub of Celebration and Belonging
The Victoria College Culture Club (VCCC) plays a vital role in bringing students together to celebrate the richness of global cultures. It offers a welcoming space where students from all backgrounds can connect through food, creative projects, educational videos, games, and open conversation. Above all, it provides a safe environment where students can express themselves freely and proudly.
A key aim of the Culture Club is to amplify student voices. Through assemblies, competitions, and collaborative activities, students are given opportunities to share their beliefs, traditions, and stories. The club strives to ensure that every student feels proud of who they are and where they come from, fostering a school community built on respect and understanding.
This year, the VCCC played an active role in supporting Ramadan. The club organised a visit to Victoria College Prep, where older students spoke with younger pupils about the significance of the month. An assembly also focused on what Ramadan means, led in part by five Muslim students who contributed to an introductory video that was shared with the entire school. To help create a welcoming atmosphere, the club decorated the temporary prayer space to reflect the spirit and beauty of Ramadan.
At Victoria College, cultural diversity is not an occasional theme - it is recognised daily. Through thoughtful support, student-led initiatives, and a deep commitment to wellbeing and inclusivity, the school continues to build a community where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to share their identity with pride.
