VCJ Admissions

Our World of Opportunity

If your son is motivated to learn and achieve at the highest levels, he'll be most welcome at Victoria College.  Registration for year 7 entry in September 2025 is now closed.

We are a selective school, but not in the traditional sense. Admission is determined by his performance based on short English and Mathematics tests and a record of good behaviour and attendance. Each applicant is also interviewed by a senior member of staff to hear about his passions, his interests and his talents.

We will also seek a reference and educational attainment data from his previous schools via a standard questionnaire.

The College aims to educate boys who are committed to their work and will benefit from the unique environment of our school. We look carefully at each candidate to ensure that there is a good fit and that he will feel comfortable and able to contribute to the positive learning environment at Victoria College.

You can read more about the Admissions process in the Years 7-11 section below.

Admissions to Years 7-11

If your son is motivated to learn and achieve at the highest levels, he'll be most welcome at Victoria College. We are a selective school, so admission is determined by his academic performance and record of attendance and behaviour. Each applicant sits short tests in core subjects of English and Mathematics during a day when he can visit the school and start getting to know it.

Boys wishing to join Victoria College during Years 7 to 11 will be assessed using the College's own entrance procedure.

You can read more about our admissions procedures in the Admissions Policy. For any further admissions queries, please contact Admissions  or call 01534 638225.

Boys from Victoria College Preparatory School

The unique relationship between Victoria College Preparatory School and Victoria College leads to a specific admissions process for 11+ entry, with automatic transfer between the two schools at 11+ in the majority of cases.

A place is guaranteed in Year 7 for a VCP student when all of the following are met:

  • consistently attains at least Secure in Age-Related Expectations  in Reading, Writing and Mathematics; and

  • attained at least Secure Age-Related Expectation in Teacher Assessments in  Reading, Writing and Mathematics  at the end of Year 5; and

  • demonstrates a good behaviour, motivation and attendance record, proactive engagement in the broader life of the school, and a positive attitude towards learning, as evidenced in their VCP school reports; and

  • obtains a mean CAT score of at least 100.

Where it is identified through annual student progress meetings (attended by school leaders from VCP and VCJ) and the provision of evidence, that any of these requirements are not being, or may not be met, automatic transfer is not guaranteed.  Victoria College reserves the right to approve progression into Year 7, based on either or both of the following (at the Headteacher’s discretion):

  • Attaining suitable results through the Admission Process for non-VCP students (see above), and considered within the external candidate application cohort, held during assessment morning in November of Year 6.

  • An interview with the Headteacher of Victoria College to discuss the appropriateness of the move.

Parents of boys will be formally offered a place at the end of the Autumn Term of Year 6, ahead of formal admission onto roll at Victoria College in September of Year 7.

Entry to the College

Boys wishing to join Victoria College during years 7 to 11 will be assessed using the College's own Entrance Procedure. Commitment, high standards of behaviour and good parental support will be pre-requisites for entry at all ages and in every case, the final decision on admission rests with the Headteacher of Victoria College.

Our ‘admission profile’ comprises four sections for entry at the age of 11: an English and Maths test, an interview, references & reports from current school, and their CAT score.  This ensures we obtain the best possible information on the young people that apply to the College, to help understand their particular strengths, and to help us make the most informed decision on a place.

English and Maths

For entry at the age of 11, boys will sit the 11+ GL Assessments tests in English and Maths (Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning will not form part of the tests), in the November prior to entry. Details of these processes, together with information on the GL Assessments resources (example papers and Parents Guide), are available on our College Website, and can be accessed on this link.

When ad hoc places become available in other years, we use Progress Tests in English & Maths.

We do not disclose the assessment results or completed papers to parents or schools, but will use these results as a means to judge academic capability in numeracy and literacy.

School Reference (including CAT score)

The College aims to educate boys who have a commitment to their work and will benefit from the structures operating at Victoria College. For the benefit of all boys at the College, students who have a poor attendance, behaviour, or motivation record will not be considered for a place at College.

  • We ask for an honest and detailed school reference, the format of which is determined by Victoria College, taking into account any learning needs, strengths and weaknesses. The previous academic achievement of each student will be taken into consideration. Educational attainment data will be requested on the Reference form
  • We also ask for the student CAT score

School Report

The most recent Year 6 school report is requested.

Interview

These will be conducted during the Assessment Morning in early November, by a member of our senior staff. This is to help us get to know the applicant a little better and allow the applicant to discuss their individual interests, skills and passions.

Examinations for Year 7 entry in September 2025 will take place on Saturday 9th November 2024. All registered students will receive details in mid-October 2024.

Scholarships

In September 2025 Victoria College will be launching our inaugural Scholarships Programme. This will see the launch of three Scholarships in the first instance:

The Landick Arts Scholarship
The Ed Le Quesne Academic Scholarship
The Blomfield Sports Scholarship

The purpose of these three Scholarships is to recognise and support excellence in some of our core areas of College provision. Scholarships last for 2 academic years. There is a standard stipend of £250 per year, which is not means tested. This money is instead to be spent directly on items or opportunities linked to supporting excellence in the chosen area.

The Scholars will be expected to fully support their areas of College life. Examples may include (but other expectations may be developed):

  • Leadership at House events or competitions
  • Submitting contributions to academic or arts-based competitions, or being part of first team in selected sports, both on and off-Island
  • Supporting events and mentoring (if appropriate) with younger students (e.g. Primary school)
  • We also expect the Scholars to represent the College at major events such as Open Day

There will be opportunties to develop leadership skills via mentoring with a senior student, with interests closely linked to their own. Any boy who has been offered a place into Year 7 in September 2025 can apply. The Scholarship will be awarded based on a separate application and subsequent interview at a Scholarship Afternoon (date TBC - around May of Year 6).

Open Evening - October 2024

This will take place on Thursday 3rd October from 4.30 - 7.30pm. Registration to attend can be completed here.
